February 11^th , 2010 – Madrid is in the top 5 European biotechnology patent applications

BioMadrid, Madrid Biotechnology Company Association, was satisfied with the data published in “the OCDE regpat database”, which placed Madrid as one of the leading European Regions for international biotech patent applications behind Berlin (Germany) and Zuid-Holland (The Netherlands) and above Paris and Copenhagen.

These data help biotech companies such as Biotools, Cellerix (Genetrix Group) and Pharmamar (Zeltia Group) to be placed, according to the Spanish Office of Patents and trademarks, among the 50 Spanish companies with more European and International patent applications in 2008.

"These data shows that biotechnology is one of the most dynamic sectors in the Madrid economy”, said Biomadrid General Manager, Juan Sebastian Ruiz. "The excellent work in patent applications from bio companies is just another indicator showing major efforts are being made in order to be innovative, create jobs and develop new products, despite times of crisis," he added.

In 2007, in order to promote the internationalization of Madrid companies, BioMadrid signed an agreement with Promomadrid, dedicated to boost the internationalization of the economy in this area.

This agreement has been implemented since then, and as shown by the results in patent applications, it has demonstrated to be an important incentive for Bio Companies in Madrid. “We will continue supporting Madrid Companies with practical and useful tools, as has been done with Industrial Property”, indicated Promomadrid President, Jesús Sainz.
